The Ottoman Empire waxed exceeding great toward the South by conquering Egypt and the Middle East.

The Roman Empire under its Imperial phase waxed exceedingly great when it conquered Egypt and much of the Middle East.

Antiochus Epiphanes occupied most of Egypt for a year but was humiliated and sent home by the Romans prohibiting him from conquering Alexandria, its capital. He went out East and captured the king of Armenia then let him go. He was beaten by Israel, and then attempted to plunder a temple in Persepolis but was defeated by the locals. At no point did Antiochus ever wax exceedingly great as a king.
